Review: Huawei Ascend Mate - 6.1 inch giant powered by a massive battery

When Samsung released the Galaxy Note range of gigantic-screened phones, everyone questioned the wisdom of such a product.
Of course, after tens of millions of units sold, it seems like many manufacturers are getting in on the action, with Huawei and its Ascend Mate being the latest.
Let's get one thing out of the way - the Ascend Mate is a gigantic beast of a device, blurring the lines even further between phone and tablet.
While the Galaxy Note II upped the ante with a 5.5-inch display, the Ascend Mate laughs in the face of such teensy dimensions, boasting a 6-inch screen. It's not quite as big as Samsung's new Galaxy Mega (with a 6.3-inch display), but it's still a gigantic size.

Specifications

You'll be surprised to know that the Ascend Mate compares quite favorably to the Galaxy Note II in terms of horsepower.
Featuring a 1.5Ghz quad-core processor and 2GBs of RAM, the Ascend Mate handles graphically intensive games such as RipTide GP well, with no perceptible framerate hitches. This horsepower translated well to everyday usage too, with apps launching promptly and scrolling being very smooth.
There are two key areas where compromises were made however - namely in the storage and display departments.
The Ascend Mate only comes with about 5GBs of usable storage out of 8GBs total, as opposed to the Note II's 16GB base size. We quickly found 5GBs to be inadequate for an hour or two of 720p video recording (although it can do 1080p too), so you'll want to grab a microSD card sooner rather than later.
As for the display, it's got a resolution of 1280x720, which wouldn't look out of place on a mid-range handset. But on this gigantic screen, we expected a few more pixels. Anyway, in real-world usage, the display was bright and vivid, but nothing spectacular.
Speaking of "nothing spectacular", we also have to mention the eight megapixel camera. The snaps tend to look great in good light, but as soon as you're indoors or in a low-light environment, the quality drops dramatically. Video recording is hit and miss too, doing a good job but looking extremely oversaturated.

Wickedleak Launches 7-inch Wammy Desire II At Rs.9,999

Wickedleak has launched the Wammy Desire II 7-inch budget-Android tablet in the Indian market for a price of Rs.9,999. The new tablet is the successor to the Wammy Desire tablet which was launched last year. Pre-bookings for the tablet have already started on the company’s website and the deliveries are expected to begin from May 15.
Coming to the specifications, the Wickedleak Wammy Desire II boasts of some impressive power under the hood for it’s price, as it gets powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412 processor paired with 1GB DDR3 RAM and Mali 400GPU. The 7-inch IPS display on the tablet sports a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels, amounting to a pixel density of 210 pixels per inch.
Things get a bit strange on the software front, as the company has given the users an option to choose from either a stable build of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, or a beta version of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The latter might have some bugs, but the company promises a stable release of Android 4.2 by next month.
WickedLeak says that the users can install either of the operating systems on the tablet by contacting its support team at its website, and it would have no effect on the warranty of their device.
The tablet gets 8GB of internal storage along with a micro-SD card slot for storage expansion by up to 32GB. On the camera front, the tablets gets a 2 megapixel rear and a 0.3 megapixel front camera. Connectivity options on the tablet include HDMI, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while it also supports 3G via a dongle.
To keep the tablet up and running for long, it gets a 3,300mAh battery as well.
With the kind of specifications that the Wammy Desire II packs-in, it certainly looks like a great value for money product. You can head over to Wickeadleak’s official website, if you wish to book one for yourself.

BSNL Internet running at less than 80% capacity due to under-sea cable cuts

BSNL has released a statement revealing that its Internet capacity has dropped by 21% thanks to fiber cuts in three undersea cables that are responsible for global connectivity. According to a story by NDTV, it’s still not clear if the cable cuts have resulted in sub-par Internet connectivity for BSNL users since the BSNL customers we spoke to did not notice any anomalies in Internet speeds and connectivity.

Two of the undersea cables that suffered from cuts are managed by Tata Communications- the IWEWE cable system connects India to Europe via the Middle East and the SMW4 cable system connects South East Asia to Europe. In a statement, Tata Communications confirmed the cable cut and said that some customers could have noticed service disruptions last Wednesday.
If you’re still suffering from abnormally low Internet speeds, you should get in touch with your ISP since the companies managing the affected under-sea cables have said that services should be back to normal.

Acer to launch 7-inch Android 4.1 tablet at Rs 7,999 in India

The competition in the budget tablet market seems to be getting hotter. Acer is reportedly all set to launch its upcoming Iconia Tab B1 for Rs 7,999 in India. The tablet is speculated to be rolled out in early 2013.

Previously, Wall Street Journal quoted a source as saying that Acer was working on a $99 tablet that will have a 7-inch screen with 1024x600p resolution and run on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). A US Federal Communications Commission(FCC) application for the tablet revealed others specifications of the Google Nexus 7 rival, including 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, 8GB onboard storage, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi as well as microSD support.

Though it made an appearance at US FCC, the tablet according to WSJ, is aimed primarily at emerging markets. Images of Acer Iconia Tab B1 surfaced on a Serbian forum and were confirmed to be real by WSJ's source.

Earlier in November, Asus-manufactured Google Nexus 7 was launched at Rs 19,999 in India, much higher than expected, considering that the device sells for $199 in US. According to a CyberMedia research, Micromax was the leader in the Indian tablet market in second quarter of 2012. In October last year, Manufacturers Association of IT predicts that the country's tablet market is set to grow by 40% till 2015-16, to 7.3 million units from 0.95 million units in 2012.

If Acer captures the attention of the Indian tablet buyers with its Iconia Tab B1, it is expected to give tough competition to Micromax's Funbook series, the leader in the tablet segment in India. It is widely expected that the Taiwanese manufacturer will showcase the device at Consumer Electronics Show, scheduled for Jan 8 to 11, 2013, in the US.
